The first Europeans to visit Oxnard were members of the Spanish expedition that sailed from Mexico City on October 15, 1803 and arrived ashore on November 4 at San Pedro Pointe. A landing party led by Captain José Ortega y Gasset explored the area around Santa Barbara Channel on February 6, 1804 but left without taking any plants or animals because they felt safe enough with only eight men aboard the ship'sboat La Bahía as protection against attack by natives. On July 5, 1835 Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all American citizens in what he called "the Californios" to leave within seven days or be punished with death. Most people chose to leave and there was no attempt by either side to force the other side out of their land. A group of men underCaptain John Cranchson decided to stay and resistance began when Lopez's troops burned down several homes in town on December 12. Cranchson then organized his men into two companies and faced off against Lopez's forces for three days before retreating back up the coast towards Los Angeles via Santa Paula Valley. In 1836 Major James Marshall founded Lompoc Mines near Oxnard after discovering gold in nearby Lompoc Hill in January of that year while traveling through Southern California en route to prospect for silver mines in Nevada. By 1840 over 2 million dollars had been deposited at Lompoc Mines including $100 thousand from Ulysses S Grant which helped finance American expansion into Northern Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1850 about seventy families lived in Oxnard along with twenty-five slaves who worked for local farmers until 1863 when it became an open air mining district known as "El Dorado". In 1865 Ghost Ranch was established just south of town near present day Agoura Hills; this was later renamed Ghost Valley due to concerns about mineral rights associated with it going through hands other than those who purchased them legitimately according as part of Rancho El Dorado State Park today. The discovery of oil reserves near Refugio Oil Field on December 3rd 1908 finally made Oxnard one of America’s leading petroleum production centers during World War I when many coastal towns across America found themselves dependent upon fuel supplies raised by Navy ships operating out of Long Beach Naval Air Station adjacent to Oxnard Harbor (). It quickly became apparent that not all residents living within easy access to major shipping points were Benefits beneficiaries so Selective Consumption Regulations (SCRs) were put into effect requiring most everyone outside Topanga Canyon eastward beyond Point Pleasant Beach between Balboa Peninsula northward and Soquel Bay must furnish proof they could pay their fair share “Social Security” benefits regardless whether they resided within 500 feet or 1000 feet²of any treatment plant operated by PG&E company erecting electric lines directly overhead generating electricity needed for lights/streetlights/golf course etc., even if these people owned no house whatsoever within said 500 foot radius nor1000 foot radius²of said treatment plant however since 1946 most anyone owning at least one house within said 500 foot radius²or 1000 foot radius²of any such power line installation has been beneficially entitled since then without ever havingto produce ANY DOCUMENT OF TITLE TO THAT HOUSING UNLESS THEY ARE ENGAGED IN OPERATING OR MAINTENANCE OF THAT POWER LINE INSTALLATION AND THEN IT IS THEIR HOUSE NOT PG&E'S
