The area now known as Oxnard was part of Rancho Cucamonga Indian Nation until 1821 when it became part of Rancho Santa Anita Mexican land grant. A post office called Oxnard was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1886, President James K. Polk issued an executive order creating a new government for southern California under which all Indian reservations were abolished except for Rancho Santa Anita which became a county seat in 1912. In 1916, both Oxnard and Westchester (now Garden Grove) were incorporated as cities within Ventura County. As Californias largest agricultural center during World War II, Oxnard played an important role in the war effort with its large Army Air Forces base and rapid production of munitions for the Pacific Theater. The city experienced significant growth following World War II with suburban development beginning on the east side of town and continuing into the 21st century on the west side near downtownOxnard City Hall Building currently houses portions of two high schools: Oxnard Union High School District #1 (grades 9-12) which opened in September 2009; and Hollywood Hills High School District #2 (grades 11-12), which opened in September 2013 Overall there have been over 22,000 residential units built or proposed throughout Greater Los Angeles combined since 2000 with some 15% being completed each year; more than any other city/town combination in this region
The first Europeans to visit Oxnard were Spanish explorers who sighted it in 1769. The area was originally occupied by the Tongva people, who called it Rancho Santa Margarita. In 1821, Mexican settlers arrived and named the land Rancho Ventura. In 1848, the American party of John C. Fremont explored California and discovered what is now Oxnard in 1849. The town was founded on October 15,1849 by Capt. James Wolkentin with a group of 30 men under the command of Lt. Col. George Dixon Wright. The town was named after Major General José Joaquín de la Vega y Costilla, commander of Mexicos army at Adobe Valley during the rebellion against Spain in 1847-48. After Victoria replaced Joaquin as Regent for New Mexico in 1850, she granted land around Oxnard to Englishman William Richardson to build a ranch there as part of his grant from her predecessor Alvarado Castro to Richardson Sr., also known as Don Pedro Gomez de Portocarrero y Salinas (1802-1871). On January 1, 1861, Commodore David Farragut's squadron blockaded San Francisco Bay and invaded southern California; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of Californias effort to become an independent republic separate from Mexico
