In Oroville, California in 1887, American Territorial Governor Hiram J. Smith authorized the erection of a military outpost on Antelope Ridge in order to better protect the eastern flank of the San Joaquin Valley. The site was chosen because it offered commanding views of the valley and its irrigation canals. The first military post at Antelope Ridge was called Fort Yountee and garrisoned a detachment of troops under Captain George Birdseye. In 1889, an additional detachment, led by Colonel Augustus C. Babcock, arrived from Oregon to take over Fort Yountee’s duties. In 1895, General Nelson A. Miles ordered an expansion of the post with two new barracks and a command center designed by architect John Lathrop Beyer for use as a field hospital for Union soldiers during the Mexican-American War. The new fortifications were completed in 1896 and renamed Fort McDowell after General McDowell himself. Withdrawal of Ulysses S Grant's Army from California in 1868 interrupted military occupation of this territory; consequently, no improvements were made at Antelope Ridge until 1887 when Hiram J. Smith authorizes the erection of a military outpost there in order to improve security against Native Americans living east of Sacramento River and south of Interstate 5 corridor (the area now known as Kern County).
Oroville is a city in and the county seat of Butte County, California, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Feather River within Oroville National Wildlife Refuge. The name means "place where obsidian (ground glass) is quarried". The first people to live in Oroville were the Mono tribe who came from central California about 12,000 years ago. They built their first houses on what is now Cottonwood Drive in 1853. In 1876, there were 257 people living in Oroville when gold was found near by and started to be mined for cash. By 1918, the population had grown to 1,500 and 25 businesses active in town including two banks and ten stores. Mining stopped around 1930 but revived briefly during World War II until it finally stopped again after 1945 because ofUSTR raids against American miners and other reasons. In 1960, ranchers established an agricultural community called Browns Valley which included a small town named Sunnyside on the north side of town near Highway 99W just east of Interstate 5 exit 146A; this area became known as North Oroville after North Brown Valley Rd., which connected it to Butte County proper on the south side of town. Oroville is a small town in southern California, located about 20 miles east of San Francisco. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Oroville was founded by the Northern California Mission Indians on May 12, 1878. It became part of the United States in 1850 and was designated as a city on December 14, 1906. On February 17, 2019, it merged with nearby Janesville to become one municipality with a combined population of over 50,000 people. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oroville were Spanish explorers who traveled through this area in 1542 and 1543. The mission at Chabot Rancho San Lorenzo had been founded on November 3rd of that year by Father Junipero Serra and Son Jose de la Cruz. Father Serra named the rancho after his friend and mentor Friar Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar who had accompanied him during his travels in New Spain (Mexico). The following year Fray Junipero founded another mission at Gabilan Rancho Negro which served Mexican colonists living along the Feather River Valley between Mariposa County and Trinity County. In 1769 Father Anselmo Septimio built an adobe chapel near present-day Oroville but no structures were ever constructed there until 1878 when mud brick walls were erected to serve as a dwelling for priests and their families while they worked around Chabot Lake nearpresent-day Ukiah. On January 6th, 1879 Bishop José Gomez arrived from Mexico City with sixty men under his command to take up temporary residence among the Native Americans at Chabot Rancho San Lorenzo where they began construction of their new missions including one called Mission Don Carlos which would eventually be renamed Mission Plaza del Arroyito after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had military headquarters located there during Mexican rule over California before its seizure by American forces in 1848 during the Alta California Campaigns.- By 1865 all eight missions had been abandoned across northern California due to severe weather conditions that included floods, fires etc., however some sites such as Chabot Rancho San Lorenzo continued operation until 1840 when most of these missions were sold off or destroyed by order of Governor Manuel Micheltorena.– In 1870 Bishop Gomez renewed efforts to establish Missions throughout Southern Californias effort known as La Salle’s Crusade which led to establishment of twenty-four Missions across Northern California compared to only six Missions established within Southern Californias boundaries previous year.- In response To La Salle’s Crusade many ranchers turnedtomissionary farming practices tht included naming their cows “Dominguez” after Fathers Juan Rodriguez Dominguez (1784 –1858), Bernardo Dominguez (1801 –1868) & Vicente Robles (1800 –1872)……….In 1880 Reverend James Laughlin organized Kiwanis Club No 2 which met monthly at an old mill site just northwest of present day Oroville for social activities such as dances etc.; see http://www.archivesinfo.com/cgi-bin/query/S0002? dc=us&item=002467092&seq=-1#searchResults - At different times various meetings place were also used including: Armory Mill SiteElk Grove ChapelOld Fort ChurchMasonic Temple / Antique StorePalo Alto Place
