Oroville is a small town in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Oroville Dam National Wildlife Refuge. The town was founded in 1879 by John Sutter and his family, who were interested in buying land for their new community on the Feather River. In 1902, Oroville became part of the newly formed San Joaquin Valley Authority. The first settlers in Oroville were Jens Jensen and his wife Maren Rasmussen. They started to arrive in 1879 and built a cabin on what is now called "Sutter's Ridge". After a few years they moved out because of the bad water quality near their settlement and started to look for other properties around where they would build their cabin next. In 1881, Jens' son Ole had come down from Sacramento with some supplies to see if he could find any good land for farming around hereabouts – he found an amazing piece of property about 12 miles (19 km) east of Oroville on what is now known as Sutter's Ridge Road. This is where Ole set up his farm today and named it after his father-in-law Jens Sutter himself! The first store building that ever existed in this area was actually built by Ole's brother Lars – it wasn't until 1886 that a post office was established here! In 1902, when the San Joaquin Valley Authority was created, Oroville became its headquarters. Here, officials could view all aspects of the valley from their HQ; this included governing everything from irrigation rights to transportation needs across the valley floor. The town grew rapidly during this time and soon boasted two stores and a hotel; along with schools (the first being opened in 1903), churches (including one operated by Reverend Houstoun), jail cells (opened in 1905!), doctors (opened in 1907!) and more! By 1912 there were also homes for government employees as well as plenty of acres available for agriculture or development! Over time though, much housing development happened away from downtown – including many subdivisions that are still present today such as Crescent Heights/Oroville Lakes/Apple Grove/Broadway Oaks etc… One thing that never changed though: people coming into or leaving Oroville always brought streetcar service right up to their doorsteps which made shopping around town easy! Today you can still catch a free ride right outside your front door if you're looking for something specific 🙂 During World War II, much of Oroville's infrastructure got destroyed due to bombing raids like those conducted against Midway Island – however thankfully nothing came close to destroying our riverside townsfolk 😉 During peacetime though things went back to normalcy pretty quickly once again thanks largely to HOWEVER MUCH LOVE FROM ALL OF US HERE IN THE COMMUNITY 😃 Anyway weathered that storm alright 🙂 Finally getting our act together again we welcomed folks like Governor Jerry Brown (@JerryBrownGov) & Mayor Darrell Steinberg (@DarrellSteinberg) over drinks at our lovely Dine & Dance spot last night😍 #TeamSoCal #ThanksForWelcome
