In the early 1900s, Oroville was home to one of the first optical departments in the United States. This department developed and used a variety of Optical Instruments including spectroradiometers, monochromators, and photometers. In 1916, they were able to use a new type of telescope called an Orthoscopic Telescope which allowed them to view objects up close. The Optical Department continued working here until World War II when they moved to Berkeley. Here they developed new instruments such as binoculars and telescopes which became very important for military applications. After World War II, the Optical Department disbanded but their legacy lives on in various forms today including at UC Davis where they operate as the School of Optics & Laser Science

Oroville, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population of Oroville was 3,240 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after one of its main streets, Oroville Rd. In 1861, an American Indian group led by Chief Joseph made their move to what is now Oroville County and homesteaded on land that would become western Kern County. By 1872, residents had begun to build homes on what became known as the "Old Town" site near present-day Oroville Creek. In 1886, they built the first school in the area and in 1912 founded the first post office here. The early years of this community were difficult due to lack of water resources and competition from other villages around here for jobs and trade goods brought over by Chinese immigrants who were working on irrigation projects nearby. However, with hard work and determination over time, progress was made through partnerships with local officials and businessmen alike including Wm H Bradley & Sons wagon driving company founder John Bradley (1853-1921), who donated land for a park in 1922; James J Roche (1868-1941), who donated money for a new dam in 1928; Fenton Tate (1895-1964), founder of Tate’s department store chain; Edward O’Malley (1865-1931), who donated land for shopping malls all around Southern California; and others During World War II most workers came from Northern California while some men worked long hours doing various odd jobs just outside town during peacetime because there were no available positions here within SBAE/WFEA during wartime as mandated by law Today many aspects have changed about life here such as increased traffic due to air travel or visitation by people from outside our town which has caused some problems but also has allowed us to remain vibrant despite challenges like drought . The city also has plans to redevelop some of itslying areas which will create new jobs and improve public transportation options
