But soon enough, problems started arising with how to get these golden coins out to everyone who needed them. In 1848, Mexico finally ceded control over California to America following their war with Spain. At that point, most Californians decided that they would rather stay under American rule than go back home and face more Mexican domination (although some did return). However, a group led by James Wolkomir set out on horseback from Oroville intent on defiance (the only time he ever rode across country). Because of his actions during the Gold Rush era - including raiding Mexican villages looking for supplies - Wolkomir became known as "The Lone Ranger." He eventually made it back home safely but his story has been told many times since then thanks in part to both feature films based on his life and books written about him (eighth grade kids can also learn about him from history museums). In short, although Oroville may not have seen as much wealth or fame as other towns during its early days due largely to its location near Mexico City (where gold was being mined), it has more recently become an important agricultural center due to its rich soil resources and easy access to water."
