Founded by American Don Heloise and his wife Emma in 1868 as a small farming community, Oroville grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location on the Feather River and its status as one of America's leading water suppliers. Oroville was named after General Andrew Jackson Orozco who fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and then served in Congress from 1855 until 1861. He was a major donor to many local charities and philanthropies including the Orozco House Museum which still resides today in downtown Oroville. Many of Oregon's first settlers arrived here during this time period and many continue to live here today including several prominent members of congress such as Representatives Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Mike Honda (D-CA). In 1908, John Culp began construction on what would soon become known as Hoover Dam which would provide irrigation water for much of Southern California. The dam also created significant environmental consequences with serious negative effects on both people living downstream and those living upstream such as Chinook salmon populations that were devastated by high levels of siltation caused bythe dam construction project. Consequently, both sides responded vigorously with legal challenges which led to court decisions that restored some aspects of riverine ecology while preserving other key features of riverine ecosystems within the boundary enforced by federal law.. Today, many businesses operate within or are adjacent to downtown Oroville making it an active business district with plenty of opportunities for Residents & Visitors alike! The town of Oroville, California, is located in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of California and is part of the Kern County metropolitan area. The population was 17,479 at the 2010 census. The name "Oroville" is derived from Yokuts words ʔa-wəlī (meaning "the place where two rivers meet"), which refers to the confluence of the Tuolumne River and the Yuba River near present-day Oroville. The first permanent settler in what later became Oroville was James Fenton in 1864. A post office called Fenton was established in 1867, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1872, land grantee John Sutter established a sawmill on the north side of Tuolumne River for use by his early settlers. Sutter's mill continued to operate until 1906 when it closed due to competition from independent mills in nearby Grover City and Feather Valley. In 1905, Hiram Maxim introduced electric light into this region with his Maxim Electric Light Company subsidiary adjacent to Fenton's mill site. This allowed for dramatic improvements in local agricultural production as well as general development throughout Kern County during that decade; thanks to Maxim's inventions, many small establishments were able to prosper and become major players in regional commerce and industry by 1910. By 1920, when Prohibition began limiting alcohol sales across America, most small businesses had either closed or been converted into saloons or other drinking places catering exclusively to prohibitionists rather than consumers outside of their peer group who could still purchase legal liquor products while enjoying various lawful activities without violating federal law). However, one notable exception being Maxims own Pacific Telephone Company - whose Palo Alto plant provided electrical service solely within its own building - that continued operations unaffected by Prohibition despite having a monopoly on local telephone service up until 1933; thus continuing an era of strong economic growth for men like Hiram Maxim who had pioneered new technologies necessary for commercial success during an era characterized by rapid technological changes paralleling rapidly changing social mores and behavior

Houghton and others to serve as a base of operations for those seeking gold and other resources in the nearby hills.
