Oroville is a city in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 61,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Oroville River and has an area of 26 square miles (71 square kilometers). The name "Oroville" comes from the two words "orion" meaning sky and "village" meaning settlement. Development continued until 1927 when irrigation became available along SR 97 north of Orinda and development stopped completely because of low water prices cliffs beyond present day Oleum Hills Rd.. In 1937 when Lassen Volcanic Field opened just south of town with intense mining operations taking place nearby including Chinle Mine workings some 11 miles away there was much concern about environmental impact including large amounts human waste being stockpiled which still exists today as part of Devil's Creek Open Space Preserve . A community meeting held on January 9th resulted in passage by City Council authorizing creation of a Park District for Olvera Valley which would include most or all portions lying within Town limits eastward to I-5 (now Cottonwood Rd.). On March 2nd Community Volunteer Committee organized under direction of Mayor Hargrave formed Forest Preserve District #1 consisting mostly comprised citizens volunteers although few if any professional planners or engineers were hired before abruptly disbanding due primarily to funding shortages during World War II . OVDP created 4 patches totaling approximately 137 acres undeveloped portions lying within Town limits eastward To I-5 & Cottonwood Rd., becoming operational on July 1st 1946 thru September 30th 1946 immediately following completion Of FPD’s Administrative Plan Hearings conducted pursuant To Section 84002(b) Of Government Code . Greatest concerns about potential impacts associated With Mineshafts Operations At There Site Were Received From Citizens Represented By Director Woodruff Who Said: “I am not sure how we are goingto take care Of this Place When We Have so Many People living Hereabouts And So Many Children playing In This Country Which Is Now Controlled By Somebody Else” As Mining Grew Extensively Closeby Residents Brought Out Their Own Planning Services To Address Environmental Impacts But Continued Unavailability Of Funds Limited Their effectiveness & Ultimately led To Dissolution OF Municipal government On October 1st 1949 After More Than Five Year Delay

The mission San Francisco de Asís was founded on December 29, 1776 by Father Junípero Serra with assistance from Spanish military officer Antonio José de Saavedra y Costilla with the goal of converting all native peoples living along the coast into baptized Catholics under one roof so that they could become part of Spain's empire after independence was gained from France in 1792. In 1853, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill near where present day Highway 299 crosses the Yuba River and this led to an influx of miners over the next few decades; however, little development took place until 1884 when Colonel John C Woolley became interested in developing what would become Oroville due to its proximity to Yuba River and Mills Dam which had both been developed during his time as governor when he recommended that the name be changed to Oroville because of its location near Yuba River and Mills Dam which had both been developed during his time as governor
Oroville Dam was completed in 1938 and is a huge artificial lake that supplies water to the California Central Valley. The dam was originally built as part of Project Mogul, which was created to increase irrigation and storage capacity for the agricultural sector in the San Joaquin Valley.
