Oroville, California is a small town in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Oroville Dam reservoir. The first permanent settlers in what is now Oroville were men of Russian descent who arrived in 1868 from Siberia. They named their land "Oroville" after the Russian River where they built a cabin and raised horses and cattle. A post office was established at Oroville in 1870, and the name remained until 1907 when it was changed to Siskiyou County because of its remote location. In 1875-76, J P McDermott organized a party of 20 men from Illinois under the direction of General George Crook for an exploration into California country east of Sacramento. On July 9th 1875 they made camp about 2 miles northeast of present day Oroville on level ground that had been recently cut by them; this site became known as Camp McDermott (later White Rock). Here they erected a telegraph pole with a flagstaff and wired their report back to Chicago which has been preserved as an article by H E Whitehead in his book "A History of Southern California". On November 3d 1875 they began exploring some new territory west of Emigrant Creek canyon where they found springs and waterholes which gave them hope that they might find gold near here but no evidence was found until 1898 when prospectors Alfred Wohlstetter and James Folsom discovered rich silver mines at nearby Inyo County. They soon abandoned their claims here because the ore was not worth mining given the high cost per ton compared to other sources such as Canadian goldfields; however, these prospects led to increased development around present day Oroville due to demand from miners for water supplies beyond what could be produced from local resources alone. Some early residents were Hiram Maxim who came with his family from Russia in 1876; he started a flour mill nearpresent day Yuba City and developed farming around present day Adelanto; John C Barlow also settled around 1888 including establishing vineyards south of today's townsite (the wines are still available); Elijah Harding set up business growing bananas while others such as J P McDermott & Co operated gristmills, livery stables and marketplaces along creek bottoms outside town limits; banking activity began with The First National Bank building at Third Street corner Main Street in 1902 followed by Citizens National Bank Building on Market Street later that same year. In 1905-1907 two lumber mills were founded by contractors G M Overstreet & Sons: one near presentday Scripps Collegetown Road (now McClintock Boulevard) while another moved downriver past Present Day Auburn (Alameda) into what is now San Bernardino county) . Development continued apace even though World War I put a stop to most smelting operations north of Fresno so much valuable metal had to be imported from Mexico where production was booming due to war production gains etc.; after World War I there resumed significant smelting activities beginning with Alcoa’s establishment of an aluminum plant southeast of downtown Pomona in 1923 which eventually became America’s largest aluminum producer When Highway 95 bypassed town in 1927 things got tough especially since trucks couldn't get through those days during floods; finally after years Of Protest By The Townspeople A Bridge Was Built In 1951 Which Connects Downtown To The Outside world . Today There Are Many Small Businesses And Some Restaurants Inside And Out Of Town Who Continued To thrive Despite All That has happened
