Convention participants have also gathered to map out important features of solar eclipses occurring between 1875-1987 as well as various other celestial objects during several African Summer Quarters gatherings beginning in 1903. Additionally, Orinda played host to the United States National Solar Observatory from 1969 until it moved to Mauna Loa in 2003. The donation land act also provided for towns to be founded near water sources for irrigation and trade purposes. In 1852, Orinda's first post office opened, and it continued functioning until 1902. That same year saw the establishment of what is now known as Orinda High School. The original school building—which still stands—was built in a wooded area near the riverbank. It served as both a public school and an agricultural school before being abandoned in 1958 and replaced by a new building that still stands today. Orinda has seen some significant changes over its history – including becoming one of the most important agricultural centers in Northern California during World War II; hosting several famous people such as singer Joe Bonamassa and author Alice Sebold; and experiencing rapid growth after development began on nearby Mountain View during the 1950s.
