It is the largest city in the county by population and second-largest city within Contra Costa County after San Francisco. The Orinda Pistol Club was founded on April 18, 1911 by six men who purchased pistols from J.P. Morgan and Company in order to protect themselves during the early days of World War I. The club grew quickly and soon had twenty-four members; all of whom were required to attend monthly meetings where they would discuss safe shooting techniques and strategies for peacetime use. In 1922, pistol club president John Wiegand organized a meeting to discuss ways to improve safety for members when traveling outside of Orinda during Prohibition Era America. Attendees voted unanimously to form an organizational committee which would establish regulations for pistol clubs throughout Northern California based on their location and membership size; this committee became known as the Advisory Committee on Pistol Clubs (ACPC). Beginning in 1923, each ACPC appointed a chairman who directed all aspects of circuitous rifle/pistol meetings across Northern California that might involve firearms; these meetings also served as a training ground for new handgunners and provided opportunities for public education about Second Amendment rights pertaining to handguns as well as rifle hunting opportunities within Contra Costa County's vast wilderness landscape.
