Orinda was founded by two brothers in 1886 as part of a Rancho San Ramon grant to their father. The brothers were Sebastian and Javier Ortiz and their father had been granted the Rancho Santa Rosa land east of Orinda by Mexican president Manuel Lopez de Santa Anna on July 26, 1846. In 1868, when it became part of U.S.A., Orinda became known as Angelina because General Antonio López de Santa Anna had married there daughter of José Gomez y Costilla one year earlier on November 20th of that year while he was governor of Mexico City. By 1872, there were 7 family members living at Orindaneta including 5 daughters and 2 sons: Pedro Francisco Ortiz (1871-1955), Isabelita Ortiz (1875-1925), Concepcion Ortiz (1877-1945), Rosario Ortiz (1881-1969), Eduardo Santos Ortiz (born October 25th 1880) The first post office was established at Orindaneta on April 15th 1886 with Aideen Buhler as the first employee. On December 1st 1905, Pascual Martinez opened up a store at what is now US Highway 395 near present day Veterans Memorial Park for local farmers looking for goods unavailable from other stores nearby due to prohibition laws then in effect in America. It would be another decade before Martinez would open his own store which would become famous for its huge orange crops being grown around orindanae trees that are still visible today near Highway 395 and Interstate 580 southbound exit ramp). In 1916 when voter turnout reached 50% required for nomination by both political parties during primary election season only women could vote but no men did so so Lorenzo Bean who ran as an independent turned out to be the sole winner becoming Californian First Lady despite losing her eligibility to serve based upon her age! Bean later served twice more terms under Governor Earl Warren until she retired effective January 3rd 1951 after he won his third gubernatorial term
