It has a rich history dating back to 1887 when Orinda was founded as an agricultural community by settlers from Stockton, California. The town was named for John F. Orinda, a rancher who had donated land to the town. The first store in Orinda opened its doors in 1888 and was the only one in the community. The towns growth continued through the years and by 1912, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1916, Orinda became an incorporated municipality and began to develop into a vibrant commercial center with several businesses including The Orinda News Company, A&P Markets, and First National Bank. By 1949,Orinda had reached its current size with over 1,000 residents and more than 15 business establishments.
