Orinda is one of the oldest towns in Northern California. It was founded by the Hetch Hetchy water company in 1867 and became a city in 1911. The town has a rich history, which can be seen in its many institutions, including the Orinda Municipal Library and Park, as well as its numerous restaurants, bars, stores and other businesses. Here are some of the more important knife-related events from Orinda's past: In 1886, John M.Wright patented the first American folding knife - the Wright Knife. This design was later improved upon by Harry Emerson Fosdick and Adolph Rupperich and became known as the RuppeKnives brand. In 1932, Orinda’s first post office opened with a three-blade folder named the Jewell Folder after Mrs. Anna Ewing Jewell (1868-1951). In 1957, Orinda’s municipal park was dedicated to Arthur Ashe (1920-2009), an eminent golfer who had played at both amateur and professional levels throughout California.

Orinda is a small city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 9,735 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Visalia-Pasadena metropolitan area. Orinda is located on the Orinda Ranch and its ZIP code is 93609. The town was founded in 1876 by John Sutter and his brother, George Sutter II. They named it after their home in England where they had been born. The original plat for Orinda was 1/4 mile square and consisted of just two houses. The first post office opened in 1877, but no one ever built a house there because there wasn't enough space. In 1880, however, Jens Christensen started building a cabin on the southeast corner of First Street and Hwy 99E (later Holliday Boulevard). He soon became known as "The Farmer from Orinda." By 1882 or 1883, other farmers were arriving to build homes around him and new businesses began to sprout: a livery stable (1883), grocery store (1884), blacksmith shop (1885), sawmill ( 1886), hotel (1887) and fruit trees ( 1889). In 1889, when John Sutter III died suddenly at age 49 while out exploring cattle country near Madera Creek Reservoir, his wife Margaret took over management of the ranch until he could take care of it himself again. After she died in 1896 without any children to take over her estate, elements within the community banded together to purchase 3 acres north of town site from Mrs. Charles Ewing for $1 per acre ($36 total). This parcel would become what we now call "Sutter Park." In 1901–1902 work began on enlarging an existing schoolhouse into a brick high school that would serve Orinda for fifty years – until it burned down in 1937! Today's High School Annex Building was erected on that site during World War II as part of Project 719A which also included building an air-raid shelter for local residents during World War II (#8479). A plaque marking this event can be found adjacent to Highway 99W about one block east of High School Annex Building along with another plaque honoring members of Project 719A who lost their lives during WWII (#8492) There have been several name changes throughout history: In 1907 it was called "New Hope" before being changed back to "Orinda" in 1938; then again to "New Hope" after being renamed again as High School Annex Building #8479 following World War II; finally settling permanently as simply 'High School' in 1957 Orinda has always been dedicated to education with its motto “FamiliesFirst” which refers both to how it values parental involvement through providing pre-kindergarten through grade 12 instruction opportunities; also how all students are expected participate fully academically by taking Electives including Advanced Placement classes., culminating with graduation requirements . Originally established as an Agricultural Settlement inaugurated by Captain James Irvine who purchased 400 acres southwestward from Mission San José de Asís , vegetation rapidly increased due too lack irrigation systems ." For more than 125 years since incorporation date December 4th 1861 via action taken by three citizens selected thru ballot election organized under direction & auspicesof City Councilor Geo Reeves - Village Name changed To Orindan February 16th 1865 From Post Office Name Of New Hope January 25th 1865 To honor Mr .
