Orinda is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located between Fresno and Stockton. The population was 7,500 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Orinda was founded in 1868 by John Richardson and named for his wife Orinda. The post office at Orinda was first established in 1872. The community began as a small farming village on Richardsons' family's Rancho Seco holdings north of present-day Orinda. In 1868, Richardson built a log cabin near what is now the town square and named it "Orindan." By 1870, community members had organized into a school board and built their own courthouse/ jail. By 1880, the settlement had developed into an agricultural center with over 100 households; orchards were among its early crops. Farms produced hay, oats, wheat and sugar beets; cattle raised beef and sheep; while stone buildings served as homes (e.g., barns) for farmers, their families and tenant farmers until about 1920 when electric lights became available to villagers through local electricity company sponsorship programs. In 1922-1923 Ralph Satterwhite served as director of public works for Kern County during which time Orindan experienced some growth due to improved transportation facilities then being available thanks to new Interstate 5 construction west of downtown Los Angeles
