Orinda is east of Hercules and south of Walnut Creek. The name Orinda comes from the Ohlone people who lived there during the 18th century. They called it "Ondina", meaning "place where they grow maize". A post office was established at Orinda in 1851, and remained in operation until 1957. Orinda was originally an agricultural community with vineyards and orchards. In the early 20th century, development began to increase as automobiles became more popular and transportation became easier to find and use than horse-drawn carts or wagon trains. By 1940, Orinda had over 100 businesses including a movie theater, two banks (the Contra Costa Bank and Trust Company and First National Bank), a grocery store, a couple of dozen homebuilders/developers, several dozen mechanics/repairmen, several hundred workers in various manufacturing plants (including many for Ford Motors), five schools (grades pre-K through 12), three churches (Anglican Roman Catholic; Methodist; Pentecostal Adventist), one hospital (Rocklin Hospital), four golf courses (two public and two private) as well as dozens of small businesses that supplied goods or services to residents. In recent years some growth has occurred elsewhere within Contra Costa County such as West Egg near Antioch which has seen an increase in employment opportunities due to its location just outside of San Francisco International Airport boundaries; Redding which saw an influx of new housing developments around Old Town downtown; Vallejo which has seen significant job growth in recent years thanks to its status as both a bedroom community for San Francisco Bay Area commuters and now also home to industrial areas providing good job prospects for employees; Danville which saw some investment by developers into retail spaces around town center while El Sobrante experienced increased growth thanks to annexation by Hayward earlier this decade). However much larger increases are expected throughout Contra Costa County given current trends
