In 1896, Smith purchased the assets of his old business and renamed it the George W. Smith armory. In 1916 Liberty magazine was founded in Orinda by Garet Copley and Harry Easley with the goal of being “the most extensively published firearm magazine in America”. Orinda is a small, unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California. It is located on the east side of Orinda Lake. The population was 2,857 at the 2010 census. The name "Orinda" originated from a Native American word meaning "beautiful view." The first post office in Orinda opened in 1887. In 1907, the town was annexed by Contra Costa County and renamed Orinda. It has since grown to encompass all of the eastern half of Contra Costa County and portions of Berkeley and Oakland Counties. The orchards that remain are one of the most important agricultural attractions in Orinda, as they were part of early settlement on the East Side of Contra Costa County. The fruit trees are still being harvested today and provide many local jobs for locals. There are three churches in Orinda: St. Edward's Catholic Church (opened 1925), First Baptist Church (1925), and Christ United Methodist Church (2003).
