Orinda, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 26,292 at the 2010 census. Orinda is located on the southern shore of Lake Merritt and about 15 miles north of San Francisco. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. The early history of Orinda can be traced back to 1853 when Don Miguel de Anza founded Rancho Rinconada de las Pulgas (later Rancho Putnam) in present day Orinda. He named it after his friend Captain George Putnam who had accompanied him on his explorations through what are now Alameda County and Contra Costa County. According to one source, Don Miguel de Anza also named an artificial hill in present day Orinda after General Sam Houston - who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican–American War - mountain ranges were so important to him that he felt they deserved their own name. In 1874, following passage of the Homestead Act by President Ulysses S. Grant, many young farmers started arriving in Contra Costa County and began to settle near where they would eventually build homes – most notably aroundpresent-day Orinda and Menlo Park along Highway 24A from Oakland into Contra Costa County. This initial period of settlement was followed by a wave of growth due to agricultural production which led to significant development in Orinda over time including: 1900: A branch line from Pittsburg/Bay Bridge Railroad was built east-west through orchard country between Menlo Park and Oakland for transportation of produce from local farms into cities like Berkeley and San Francisco; 1920s: Streets were laid out grid fashion within orangewood blocks with single family residences scattered throughout; 1960s: First major commercial development took place with acquisition by ChevronTexaco of land southwest of downtown for a large refinery complex; 1970s: More housing developments were developed as farmland became more valuable as oil production declined; 1980s & 1990s: Mainstream culture begins taking hold with high school enrollment increasing as businesses opened up and families moved away from city living patterns

Orinda is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is bordered by the San Joaquin Valley to the south and east, and by Fresno County to the north. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. The Orinda Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The original inhabitants of what is now Orinda were probably Aritomari people who lived along or near present-day Highway 99. The earliest European settlement in what is now Orinda was made by José Vallejo, Jr., on November 15, 1846 when he organized a party of ten men from Bakersfield into a Company with Share Capital under the name of "Vallejo's Californios." These early settlers were not farmers but ranchers and their primary occupation was grazing cattle and providing transportation for goods brought overland from Mexico City. On October 26, 1851, two years after Vallejo's arrival in Orinda, his company received a deed from Manuel Nieto (a Mexican immigrant), owner of Rancho Los Arroyos Blancos (later known as Rancho Seco) east of I-5 on what is nowparts of High Street in Orinda. This land had been purchase by Juan Bautista de Anza during his aborted attempt to re-establish Spanish power over parts of California after its discovery by Captain Gabriel Moraga on September 14, 1769. During this time there were three other grants which either went unclaimed or were sold only to those who could provide evidence that they would be used for farming purposes rather than ranching operations: Rancho Viejo del Norte grant #2/6 = 13 acres northwest corner lot 6; Grant #4/9= 11 acres northeast corner lot 12; and Grant #5/10= 2 acres northwest corner lot 5. Upon news that Anza had failed to establish control over California proper following his return from ad liberation expedition across Mexico back in 1775–76 certain members of the Spanish Mission Santa Fe moved westward into present day Kern County looking for new land beyond Mono Lake where they founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on January 17, 1777 (the first Catholic mission in Alta California). Withdrawing some 20 families including Pio Pico and Junípero Serra these founders established Monterey Bay Naval Station about fifteen miles southwest of modern-day Orinda on an area currently occupied by Tehama County Road 97A In 1851 Josef Martinez arrived from central Mexico with his family seeking refuge from Indian attacks near Sutter’s Fort and settled atwhat became Martinezville next door to Anzalone’s ranch offering them passage if they desired it so he could sell them passage should they leave their homes during times Of Peace or War like himself did during general “Pueblo uprisings” throughout New Spain Martinez bought 960 acres adjacent to present day Anzalone property east off US 99 just south of today's SR 97A . He began cultivation within minutes upon landing here May 1st 1852 naming it Gaviota Prairie after Maria Antonia Gaviola (1802–1872), daughterof Andrés Gaviola y Valdivia who fought side with General José Nunez against Ramon Castro at La Mesa near Yosemite National Park June 25th 1860 Orinda grew rapidly due largely to two factors: first Anglo miners discovered gold Fever Creek vein starting production around 1865 which led alluvial gold mining until 1901 thenRL&SL smelting started producing arsenic blackGold rush period 1861 When alluvial gold runs out many people left Gold Rush country looking for other sources while others built new towns such as Livermorebutton mine started production rich man better find another place To get money rich men found ways To get money

Orinda was founded in 1853 by George and Anna Orinda as a small community on the east side of Sacramento. In 1905, it became part of the city of Sacramento. The population grew rapidly during World War II, with the city taking in residents from nearby cities such as Oakland and Berkeley. The war led to a boom in businesses, housing, and job opportunities; Orinda prospered even though most residents were African American. The postwar years were more difficult for the town; crime rates increased, and the school system struggled to keep up with demands for student enrollment. But in the late 1960s, Orinda began to experience a resurgence as a center for creativity and technology. In 1990, it merged with neighboring unincorporated areas to form the current City of Orinda.
