These pioneers developed a dairy and blacksmithing industry that continued until around 1920 when development began along Interstate 5 directly adjacent to Orinda's downtown area. In 1916, a post office was established in Orinda and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1966; it was replaced by an interstate highway interchange closer to today's population center that significantly changed how many residents accessed their town core services (roads, schools, newspapers). Orinda has enjoyed high levels of economic development throughout its history due to its proximity to I-5 and its agricultural production which continues today as well as its focus on outdoor recreation including downhill skiing and snowboarding; fishing for largemouth bass, trout, salmon, steelhead and catfish; hiking trails through forested hillsides providing access to springs and lakes; golf courses such as Pee Dee Country Club (1946) or Byron Bay Golf Course (1964); whitewater rafting down the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta during summer months; biking tours through rolling countryside canals filled with water potholes called "Gates" – named after early pioneer farmers George Gates (1841-1920) and his son Franklin Gates (1875-1947), who also ran one of America’s largest cotton plantations – Gate Canal Company; windsurfing off North San Francisco Bayou between Crescent City and Redwood City during winter months; horseback riding at Isabella rancho among other activities.
Orinda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the East Bay area of San Francisco and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the south and east, Orinda to the north, Hercules to the west and Dublin Hills to the northwest. The first Europeans to see Orinda were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his expedition in 1542. Rancho Pastoria de las Borreras, later part of Utopia Township was patented in 1848 by José Joaquín Herrera. A post office called Orinda was established in 1851, but it closed in 1861 due to fatigue from service. The town became an agricultural center with orchards and fields until after World War II when large-scale manufacturing began nearby in San Jose and Richmond. Orinda was incorporated as a city on November 1, 1951; its boundaries were based on part of Utopia Township which had been annexed into Contra Costa County two years earlier. In 1984, voters approved Measure B (a $5 million bond issue) that created Orinda's first organized school district; this act gave local control over education within city limits for the first time ever. In 2006, construction began on a new ballpark for UC Berkeley's baseball team; it was announced that construction would be completed before their season began so that they could play their home games at UIUC's Kimball Hall instead of Veterans Memorial Stadium which had been their previous home since 1998. After several delays due to environmental issues related to building atop an old oil refinery site next door—the project ultimately cost $211 million—the new ballpark opened in September 2007 as planned.
