Orinda, California is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is located east of San Pablo and north of Hercules. The first Europeans to visit Orinda were the Spanish who named it "Palo Alto" after a small mountain range in Alta California. In 1851, American gold miners discovered gold near Orinda and began trading with the Spanish town of Vallejo for goods they brought back from their diggings. A post office was established at Palo Alto on December 11, 1852; it remained in operation until February 14, 1865 when it was renamed Orinda. The name change may have been due to the discovery of quartzite rocks in nearby Vallejo which bore similarity to some found near Orinda. Avila Adobe No 2 (now part of Rancho Dominguez National Monument) was home to a large detachment of Ulysses S Grant's 7th Cavalry Regiment during the Mexican–American War on January 6 and 7, 1847 as part of its relief effort following Los Angeles' siege by Mexican forces under Santa Anna. The troops were based at Avila Adobe before moving south along Grapevine Creek to Mission Viejo where they relieved General Antonio Lopez y Costilla's division east of San Diego on January 8-9. In 1854 Zadock Robinson built his adobe rancho (later called Rancho Rinconada), northwest of present-day Orinda; he offered one acre ("aguache") land for each family member who contributed $50 toward building a cabin or contributing towards a farmstead valued at $2 per acre ($100 total). Some families did not have enough money so they mortgaged their homes or left town altogether and moved into Robinson's herders' camp while others built simple cabins close by known as "Higgins Cabin". By 1860 there were over 100 Hudsons living in what became Rancho Rinconada including Zadock Robinson's six children and their spouses plus 30 head of horses and 50 head of cattle/lamb cases harvested fromMexican missions near Fillmore Valley between 1850-1860 . In 1862 two brothers named Edward Hinchcliffe took up homesteading about northeast corner lot now occupied by Redwood City High School; namesakes for today's Hinchcliffe Road also stretch through that area including SR 99E., just beyond school boundaries across private property owned by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen today although most development around school boundaries has taken place within Redwood City limits since then: Pioneer Park & North Shoreline Regional Library are both located on lots adjacent to old Hinchcliffe property

Orinda was founded in 1887 by American Civil War veteran and surveyor George H. Smith as a small cattle ranch near present day Redding and Yuba Rivers. The original town site was on the eastern bank of the Yuba River opposite modern-day Orinda. The first post office opened in 1891 and remained open until 1915; it was then moved to its current location on Main Street. In 1905, Orinda became an incorporated city with incorporation by vote of its citizens following a referendum on whether or not to become an independent municipality subject only to state law governing cities within California's boundaries. The City Council also passed a resolution ratifying the move from rural to urban status and adopted new City Code sections regarding planning, zoning, water rights, fire inspection, health services and other municipal functions which have been unchanged since then. Orinda has long been known for agriculture; before it became an incorporated city, it relied entirely upon ranching for its economic activity including haymaking, grazing, fruit picking and crop production until beneficial investments in transportation made agricultural production more feasible for largerscale businesses such as grocers and processors beginning in the 1960s which led to Orinda becoming one of Northern California's most vibrant downtowns characterized by high-quality retail stores (such as JCPenney), professional art galleries (like Cal Arts) and dining options unavailable elsewhere within its borders.
