Bullets in Orinda, California date back to 1892. The first rifle ammunition made in the city was a .50 caliber ball cartridge designed by George Armstrong and Company. In 1903, the first handgun ammunition was made in town. It was a 9mm Parabellum cartridge developed by John Moses Browning and published under the name of “Paterson”. The first shooting at an international competition took place on October 9th, 1911 when American Charles Daly shot a perfect score of 85 out of 100 against Croatian Jovan Vukasinovic with an old Model A revolver from 1892 at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds. This event marked the beginning of what would be called “the Golden Age of Pistol Shooting” and many famous shooters from that era hailed from Orinda. In 1935, Orinda became one of the cities that joined together to form the City of Sacramento Municipal Utility District (CMD). As part of this merger, CMD made bullet production its top priority and began developing new types of ammunition for their handguns and rifles. One such product was .22 LR rimfire ammunition which soon replaced .50 caliber ball cartridges as the city’s primary ammo choice. Today, Orinda is still home to some of CMD’s most important companies including Stoneham Ammunition Manufacturing Company and Hornady Ammunition Corporation where bullet production continues to be one of the company’s primary focus areas. Orinda, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Orinda was founded in 1879 by James Irvine and named for his wife, Orinda Irvine. The town was incorporated in 1909 and became a city in 1951. In 1984, Orinda annexed Pinecrest to its city limits. The annexation created an adjacent school district which now has a total student population of more than 26,000 students attending over ninety-four schools within Orinda’s boundaries. Orinda’s history dates back to 1879 when James Irvine built a cabin on Rancho Pico de la Hacha on the banks of the Tuolumne River. This rancho later passed through ownership several times before it came into being owned by William Tilton in 1862 and then by John Sutter in 1868. When Pacific Coast Railway reached this location they renamed it “Irvine” after their founder James Irvine who had helped finance their construction. The first store opened here on December 6th, 1879 under the name “The George & Son Store” with prices starting at one dollar and up to five dollars per item sold. In 1907, when City Council decided that incorporation would be beneficial for both towns as well as provide more services for residents, members from both towns voted unanimously to become one community under one name with council direction that all businesses should be called “The George & Son Store” until further notice (or until new business could be registered). On February 11th 1909 City Council changed the name of Orinda to “Orindia” after Jimmie Dillingham who had been instrumental in helping get everything organized including getting permits for streetcars which ran between Fresno and Orindia making it easier for residents to get around town without having to go downriver every time they wanted something or needed something else done; he also spearheaded efforts to erect a schoolhouse/library/courthouse/heat plant/ hotel soon afterwards! Iron mining began operations near present day Orange County during World War II while aluminum production took off shortly thereafter due largely to wartime needs such as car parts made from aluminum smelters throughout Southern California which were trucked into Northern California Delivery Points where they were melted down and cast into new automobiles! With so many people moving into or expanding into this rapidly growing region during these years there wasn't enough room available on ranchos or other rural land holdings so lots were sold off at various points along railroad tracks throughout northcentral CA… some still stand today like Rancho Paloma Vista west of Needles (near Cottonwood) where you can see evidence of early cattle drives from Lompoc & Atwater Counties over 100 years ago!! A postcard from 1912 shows what may have been ORINDIA'S FIRST SCHOOLHOUSE - A large wood frame building on Main Street which served grades 1-6 until 1938 when Instructional Center #1 replaced it!
