Orinda, California is a small town located in the Sacramento Valley. It began as a post office in 1879 and has since grown into a center for ammunition production and distribution. The town was home to the Orinda Ammunition Manufacturing Company from 1907 until it closed in 1966. Today, Orinda is home to the American Munitions Museum, which preserves and displays vintage munitions equipment and products from around the world. The first bullets were fired at what is now Orinda on July 4th of 1879 by Capt. George Waddell of the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition under orders from President James K. Polk to commemorate America’s victory over Mexico that year at Buena Vista Hill. In 1903, when Orinda became an incorporated city, its mayor named John Riddle decided to produce his own rifle ammunition using local coal resources instead of buying rounds from other manufacturers. He also produced pistols with this new ammo and soon had a large customer base among law enforcement officers throughout Northern California. In 1926, when Alameda County was formed from portions of Contra Costa and San Mateo Counties, Orinda became one of its five towns within county limits (along with Oakland, Emeryville, Jack London Square, Fremont and Richmond). In 1957, following enactment of the Gun Control Act of 1934 by Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his New Deal program), Alameda County banned handgun sales outside cities or municipalities with more than 5500 residents; this decision applied only to handguns but not rifles or shotguns (which continued to be available for purchase within city limits). East and started producing ammunition for the California rifle range. In 1912, Winchester Ammunition Corporation was founded in Orinda by John Winchester and started producing ammunition for shotguns and handguns. In 1915, Remington Arms Corporation was founded in Orinda by Charles Remington and produced ammunition for rifles, pistols, shotguns, and machine guns. The company closed down in 1927.

Orinda is located about an hour north of Sacramento and about two hours south of Fresno. It is part of the Stanislaus County, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. ORINDAS DOWNTOWN IS NOW ONE OF THE SADDEST REACTIONS TO HIGH STRESS LOSS OF INDUSTRY AND FARMING HERE OVER THE PAST DECADE WHERE MANY LOCAL BUSINESSES HAVE FAILED TO OPEN UP AGAIN BECAUSE THERE ARE NO NEW INVESTMENTS IN AROUND HERE WITH LIMITED SPACE FOR NEW HOUSING developments even though many residents are urginglocal officialsto do just that because they see no future for their city if there aren't significant investments here soon) . There have been efforts over the past few years by local officials including Mayor Darrell Steinberg (R)to revive downtown business by investing in marketing & infrastructure improvements like sidewalks, lighting, public restrooms etc.; but those attempts have not panned out yet givenlimited moneyresourcesavailable
