They also had a metal housing that was easy to grip and hold onto. In 1892, Julius Caesar Griggs patented what is now know as the “Griggs Scope” which utilized an 8x42mm objective lens with its own tube focuser system. This scope was very successful and was adopted by many Riflemans throughout Europe during the 19th century. It remained in production until 1921 when it was replaced by the more popular 4x42mm Schmidt-Crosby spotting scope!
Orange was founded by two brothers in 1827. The first post office in Orange opened in 1829. Orange became a town in 1846 and was named for the orange tree, which is located near the town's center. In 1893, Orange annexed parts of neighboring Santa Ana and Westminster. The annexation created a new city government, which lasted until 1945 when it merged with Anaheim to form the current city of Anaheim. Orange has always been an agricultural community and has produced some of the most famous fruits and vegetables in California: oranges, potatoes, carrots, apples, grapefruit, watermelons etc. The growth of citrus production brought many businesses and factories to Orange including Wernham Hogg Paper company (now JTBC), General Motors Manufacturing plant No. 5 (now GMC), Hewlett-Packard computer plants No. 3 (HP) and 4 (IBM). It also led to the construction of many homes on what is now Isla Vista Avenue between Crenshaw Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. Many students who attend UCLA or USC transfer from other schools into Irvine Hills apartments during their undergraduate years so that they can experience all that Orange has to offer!
Orange County was first populated in 17nar y by Spanish missionaries. In 1821, it became part of California. The county seat was first established at Irvine, but the town of Santa Ana became the county seat in 1828.
