In 1864, General civil war veteran Jesse Barnes acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of Anaheim which he called Barnes Heights after himself and donated it to the City of Anaheim for educational purposes only. On December 12, 1868, Anaheim incorporated as a city with its own government under Mayor Manuel Fernandez and fellow Democrat James Sneath serving as its first mayor. In 1886–87 James McMillan developed an orange grove on what is now called Civic Center Drive (SR116). Orange began growing oranges commercially around this time too but it wasn’t until 1915 when local inventor Julius Rosenwald started selling cars that took advantage of Southern California’s new 16-mile (25 km) per hour speed limit that people actually started driving into town to buy fruit instead of horseback or oxen pulling wagons down these winding country roadsides all the way from Pasadena or Long Beach where they bought their produce from farmers near Indio or Camarillo. For many years before supermarkets got their presence in town there were small grocery stores run by women such as Mrs. Cruse who ran her store at Sixth Street & Mason Avenue from about 1912 until her death in 1951; also Mrs Dickson whose store operated along Vine Street next door to Mrs Snyder’s for several years beginning in 1919; finally Mrs Storey ran her grocery store at Fourth Street & Main Avenue from 1922 until her death in 1978 which left behind numerous descendants still running small businesses today including one family Grocery Outlet Inc., founded by Linda Antonelli in 1984 with locations throughout Southern California
