In 1849, two groups of settlers – the Mission Indians and Englishmen – arrived in what is now Orange County. The mission was founded by Father Francisco Palomares in 1795 on an isolated piece of land north of Point Nationale. The first white settlers in Orange County were Royer brothers from Vermont who arrived in 1850. They built their own cabin on Rancho Santa Ana de la Brea (now part of Irvine). The first store opened in 1851 at 4th Street and Broadway Avenue in Anaheim. A post office was established at Anaheim Heights on December 15, 1851. In 1853, Isabella Maria Lopez married Juan Pacheco and they moved to Anaheim from Mexico City where she had been working as a domestic servant for her uncle José Gomez de la Mora y Becerril. In 1865 they bought 5 acres (2ha) near present-day Disneyland for $1 per acre ($37/km²). They named it La Brea Valley after their mother’s birthplace near Barcelona, Spain. development began about this time with small ranch houses called bungalows or “chaletes” because they were heated by open fires instead of electrical heating systems common then. By 1870 there were over 150 chaletes scattered around La Brea Valley . Orange, California is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 56,714 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Orange County and one of its five cities. Anaheim, Irvine and Santa Ana are also major metropolitan areas within the county. The history of Orange begins with Rancho Caddo de la Vieja de las Flores (Caddoan Indian Reservation), which was surveyed by Captain George Gage in 1823. In 1846, when Mexico ceded California to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, President James K. Polk ordered General Manuel Micheltorena to take possession of Rancho Caddo de la Vieja de las Flores and nearby land for development into what would become Anaheim Hills. On February 26, 1850, Micheltorena awarded title to developer John Sutter for 152 acres (6 ha) at present-day Garden Grove east of Anaheim Avenue and north of Interstate 5 near Thanksgiving Road. The grant included an allowance for 20 miles (32 km) per mile on either side of Route 66 for carriageable timberland; this area became known as “Sutter’s Forest” or “Anglomerate Country” because many English people had settled there in the early 19th century after conducting logging operations on adjacent mountainside slopes during their honeymooners' honeymooning trips from England toCalifornia in search of rare trees that could be exported back home. In 1857 Sutter leased 4WD wagon roads through Garden Grove south to Seal Beach (now Huntington Beach), east to Fullerton and south again along I-5 to Long Beach; these roads are now called State Route 519 and State Route 101 Alternate routes 1 & 2A respectively). By 1860 over 50 farmers had leased rights parcels totaling 640 acres near Seal Beach along I-5 including 3 quarters sectional grants from Isabella Earle Richardson donated by her brother Samuel Richardson III who served as Governor of New Mexico Territory at that time; this area now includes Seal Beach Boulevard between SR 519 & 101 Alternate routes 1 & 2A Streetsboro City Limits
