Orange is located in central California, and has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for at least 8,000 years. In 1850, gold was discovered in nearby San Bernardino County, and quickly led to a population growth in Orange. By 1870, over 100 businesses had opened up in Orange alone due to its rich mineral resources. Businesses also extended their operation into other parts of Santa Ana County through trade or transportation links. The city began to grow rapidly with new buildings being erected such as an opera house and a schoolhouse. However, although orange was becoming a thriving city center it still faced many challenges including lack of housing, infrastructure development (such as roads and schools), competition from neighboring cities such as Anaheim and Riverside, and conflict with Native American nations such as the Tongva People over land rights. Despite these challenges however, Orange continued to grow rapidly until 1906 when it was forced to merge with adjacent Riverside City into one larger municipality due to budget cuts within Santa Ana County government. The merger failed due to opposition from some residents who felt that Orange should have been kept separate from Riverside City. Aftermath of this failed merger saw much violence between the two cities which eventually led to their separation in 1907 under federal law known as Section 1098(a) of the Civil Code of America
On January 1, 1848, the first white people set foot on what is now Orange County. They were Missionaries of Jesus who came from Mexico to preach Christianity to the indigenous people. The mission was abandoned in 1851 and most of the Missions Indians died from apox that year. In 1857, Captain John C. Fremont explored and mapped the area that would become Orange County when he discovered gold in Kern River Valley. In 1859, following his discovery, Oranges began being developed as citrus fruits were becoming popular in California. A sawmill was built near present-day Anaheim Hills in 1860; it became an important part of Southern California's economy until it closed down in 1903. The name "Oranges" comes from two Spanish words: orangera (orange) and ataque (attack). The opening of Disneyland Resort on July 16, 1955 marked the beginning of a new era for Orange County with its many new attractions including Playland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios.
