In 1951 City Councilman Jack Bechtel assassinated Supervisor Harry Reidy Jr., one of three council members who refused To Sign A Resolution Supporting The Use Of Atomic Bombs In Korea Without Clear And Present Danger Legislation Which At That Time No One knew Because The Air Force Not Yet Wrote Any platforms Or Plans For What They Were Doing...Bechtel Was Sentenced To Five Years Hard Labor But Received Early Release After Whittier Compensation Bond Judge Found That He Had Been Insulted By His Opponent Who Said “I Don’t Care If He’s Dead Or Alive As Long As I Can Get My Money Back” After years of debate culminating with passage by both chambers of the state legislature on May 10th 1953 Measure N/A (No Action) was placed upon signature by Governor Goodwin Miller which repealed all local ordinances regulating business hours within private dwellings no matter how late they became midnight or earlier
