In 1881, Edward F. Smith, proprietor of the Orange Cove general store and post office, erected a small cabin on a promontory overlooking the ocean at what is now known as "Bipod Point." The original bipods were made from large logs that had been cut down near by. One of the first bipods was used by Mr. Smith to haul goods to his store in boats on the bay. By 1907, there were three stores and several businesses located on or near "Bipod Point". In 1915, the last business opened at "Bipod Point" when A.L. Higginbotham took over ownership of the store from Mr. Smith. At that time, there were 10 businesses in Orange Cove and it was one of the most active fishing ports in California. In 1969, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., owners of part of Southern California's electrical grid, decided to move their corporate headquarters from San Francisco to Orange Cove because they felt it would be more convenient for their employees to work in close proximity to their customers and research facilities. The new offices were built on land that once housed Higginbotham's Store and later became known as Brown's Landing Park after its founder (and current owner) Edwin Brown donated land for such an endeavor in 1926. With so many businesses now situated along "Bipod Point", visitors can enjoy a variety of activities including fishing, boating and swimming at various points throughout the year; however one activity not easily available is boat-building due to high waves caused by strong winds during winter months which make building docks difficult or impossible without assistance from lifeguards stationed offshore; nevertheless some brave souls have taken up this challenge!

Orange Cove, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the east side of the Kern River and is bordered by Mojave National Preserve to the south and east, Adobe Valley to the north, and Bakersfield to the west. The first permanent settler in Orange Cove was David Moody who built a cabin in 1859. In 1866, two brothers named George and John Atwater founded an agricultural colony called Atwater's Ranch on property now within Orange Cove limits. By 1870, they had developed a land grant that included what is now Orange Cove. In 1870s-1880s there were many gold discoveries in Kern County including at Gold Rushtown (now known as Chico) about 25 miles southeast of Orange Cove. This stimulated industry in Orange Cove with several mills being constructed including one by Wm Henson which produced flour for local markets until 1907 when it went out of business. In 1881-1882 Samuel Morse set up his own telegraph line from Los Angeles to San Francisco through Orange Cove earning $5 per mile operated at rates then double those charged today; this stimulated development along US Route 66 which ran through town center today before branching off into various Directions near Mono Lake and other places In 1886 Charles Fenton built an ice cream factory on Main Street that still stands today - it became one of the most popular food items available throughout California during its time In 1906 Simeon Sutter opened his citrus grove near present day Happy Camp Road outside of town Limits; he soon exhausted all available land so established his ranch just beyond our limits today It should be noted here that although some people may have lived here from before 1860s others arrived during or after these years The first post office in town was established on March 17th 1865 by Capt A C Whitman with name “Cove”
