Orange Cove is a small town in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Palm Springs and is about 25 miles (40 km) east of Interstate 10. The name "Orange Cove" is likely derived from orange trees that were common in the area during the 1800s. Orange tree disease struck this area in 1913, which led to a decline in production of oranges and other citrus crops. The first post office was established at Orange Cove in 1907, and it remains operational today. The community developed around citrus farms that produced produce for local markets. By the 1920s, however, many of these farms had been demolished or abandoned due to economic difficulty. In 1937, development began on what would become known as Orange Cove Station - an electric station providing power to homes and businesses within the town limits. As part of efforts to revitalize local economy, community leaders began working with alcoholics and drug addicts who were living in poverty near casinos and entertainment areas across Southern California. This program ended in 1982 when Proposition 27 passed into law legalizing gambling within 100 feet (30 m) of any school or playground; Orange Cove was exempted from this rule because its streets are too close to casinos and amusement parks). Today, Orange Cove is home to a mixture of people from different parts of Southern California who have made their homes here over the years: retirees from Palm Springs; students from nearby universities; workers from nearby factories; as well as families with children who attend schools within walking distance of their homes. By 1920, only a few people lived in Orange Cove; by 1930 there were just 10 residents remaining. One of the most notable places in this area is the Orange Cove Indian Reservation. This reservation was established in 1847, and it has played a big role in the history of Orange Cove. The first people to live in this area were the Kumeyaay Indians. They lived here until they were displaced by European settlers in the 1800s. The Europeans who settled here were mostly Dutchmen and Frenchmen. They built their homes and businesses here, and they also hunted game nearby. The Dutchmen who lived here were known as the Ohlone people. They left Java Island around 1650 AD, and they started living on what is now Orange Cove Peninsula. These people grew food crops and collected shellfish from thebayou below them. They also traded goods with other groups around Bay Area includingthe Lenape tribe. The Frenchmen who lived here were called La Vache family because they had a cow named Vache which they kept on their farm near present-day Santa Cruz County! These people came overlanders to Baja California during 1700 AD to trade goods with native groups. Some of these early French traders went on to become important leaders within the Mexican government! Eventually, Englishman arrived in Baja California during 1769 AD after sailing upriver from Manila Bay! He was looking for a route to India when he discovered this coastline! He named this region “Baja California” after his homeland! After experiencing some success trading with Native Americans, Englishman decided to settle down permanently on this coastline! His colony would eventually grow into what is now San Francisco – one of America’s most well-known cities!
