A man by the name of McCoy discovered more gold than anyone else in 1860 when he worked near what is now downtown OC after finding an old vein of silver ore on shoreline he had missed during earlier explorations In 1871, J P Morgan bought property northeast of OC from James Irvine for $10,000 (). He quickly built up mineral rights around Orange Cove Creek which led to his famous mining operation (now known as Christie's Mines) - one of the world's largest open-air copper mines (). Orange Cove is a small town in Inyo County, California, located on the southern coast of the mainland United States. The population was 559 at the 2010 census. Orange Cove is part of the White Sands National Monument. Orange Cove was founded in 1870 by Captain Wm. H. Doherty and his family as part of Rancho San Vicente de las Flores y Luna. The first store in town opened in 1872 and the first post office was opened in 1875. The name for Orange Cove, which means "the place where oranges grow," originated from when Captains Doherty and others found oranges growing wild on their property. The town began to be developed around 1886 when James Clements built a wharf and warehouse at what is now known as Main Street (now 1st Street). By 1898, there were five businesses in town: two stores, one bakery, one hotel, and one livery stable. In 1912-13, citrusiculturist Jerald Jobe improved orange trees on his ranch southwest of town to become one of America's first commercial growers of oranges using scientific culture methods instead of traditional grafting techniques used at that time to produce fruit that would last long enough to sell commercially. He named his farm Orangeseed after this project but it reverted back to its original name soon thereafter because so many people called him Orangeseed instead of Jobe because they had never heard it pronounced correctly! In 1922-24 local boy Roy Chapman became involved with efforts by other West Coast men to start an American car company based out of Northern California; he persuaded General Motors president William Durant to invest money in the venture known as GMC/Orangeseed (later Chevrolet). From 1925 until its closure in 1927, GMC/Orangeseed produced more than 2 million cars including over 500 truckloads branded with GMC or Orangeseed logo

The Mormons used this location as a landing point for their trips down the California Coast from Nauvoo, Illinois. In 1888, oranges began to be grown in Orange Cove. By 1912, there was a small citrus orchard with twenty-four trees producing 2,000 oranges per acre
