Scope mounts have been in use in Ontario, California for over fifty years. The first mount was designed and built by George Fenton, who patented the design in 1951. A company called Fenton-Boyd Bros. manufactured these mounts until the early 1970s. The modern scope mount was developed by Jack Northrop in the early 1980s and first became available on a wide range of guns including bolt-action rifles and handguns. The firstOntario, California Expandable Mount was built in 1954 by the Ford Motor Company. This mount allowed for easy mounting of a camera or other large object on a car dashboard. It was replaced by the Ford E-Mount in 1957. The E-Mount was similar to the Ontario, but had an adjustable height range. It was replaced by the Ford SuperE-mount in 1988. The SuperE-mount allowed for mounting of cameras and other large objects up to 66 inches tall and 50 inches wide on cars. The mount was replaced by the Ford Arriflex Mount in 2003.

Scope mounts are devices which allow the attachment of a scope to a rifle or shotgun. Scope mounts have come in various shapes and sizes over the years, with different purposes. Some scope mounts are designed purely for holding a scope, while others allow the use of other accessories (e.g., bipods) as well. The first common type of scope mount was the Weaver-style mount, which allowed attaching a standard Weaver-style refractor telescope to a rifle or shotgun. Ontario, California was a region located in the central United States on the Pacific coast. The area now includes much of Orange County and portions of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. WhenCalifornia became a state in 1850, it included parts of what are now Ontario and Riverside Counties. In 1853, the Legislature created Stanislaus County out of part of Ventura County. The county name derives from French for "upper Canada." The first settler in what is now Orange County was John Catt (1781-1849), who founded Orinda in 1824. Both Ontario and Riverside Counties were named after English provinces that had been lost to Mexico during the Mexican-American War: Ontario because Queen's Park was near Toronto; and Riverside because most citrus trees were grown thereabouts. It was not until 1886 that both counties became part of California when they were merged into San Diego County. In 1892, agricultural land around Corona began to be developed as well as land east of Mission Bay for local development including housing developments called "The Pines". These developments attracted many people from Northern California who found cheap living opportunities available close to major city centers while also freeing up large tracts of dedicated agriculture land for other uses such as industry or recreational use by growth promoters like George Hearst
