In 1840, he purchased 2,000 acres (100 km2) of land east of today's Toronto for $5 per acre ($27 per hectare). Today's Vaughan neighbourhood began as part of this purchase. At this time there were only a few hundred people living in and around Toronto proper. Hutton built many residences and a mill which Eventually developed into an important centre for flour production in eastern Ontario during the 19th century_. During the 1850s and 1860s much development took place along Yonge Street south of downtown Toronto including the institution that would becomeUniversity College Schoolof Medicine located at what is now St Clair Avenue East (and formerly University Avenue). Ontario, California was founded in 1848 by the Spanish as part of Alta California. It became a United States territory in 1850 and was named for the Ontario River. The region that today includes Ontario and San Bernardino counties was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. The first European to see what is now Ontario County was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1775 while exploring westward from Mexico City on his way to Mount Victoria. He named it after his homeland, Spain. In 1849, the US Congress passed an act creating a new territory called Nevada Territory including parts of what is now California. On February 14, 1850, this new territory came into being when it was merged with the old Mexican land grant of Rancho Los Padres del Norte to form California Grant lands.
