In 1848, it became part of Mexico when Texas seceded from Mexico. Ontario was named for George Stephenson, an Englishman who built the first locomotive in 1854 between London and Toronto. The name may also be connected with Ontario Hill in nearby Sacramento. The area that now includes Ontario was first settled by Native Americans about 12,000 years ago. After French missionaries arrived in 1769 and began translating Buddhist scriptures from India into French, they found many Indian people living hereabouts and began baptizing them as Catholics. In 1792, British traders discovered gold strike near present-day Auburn and started exploring for richer veins of silver near San Bernardino County’s almost 700 miles (1,600 km) of coastline on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. They soon realized that this land could support a large population – they called it “New Albion” – because its climate was milder than that in California and its soil rich in natural resources such as coal, timber, iron ore and saltpeter. By 1800 there were over 10 thousand European immigrants living in what is now Ontario; most were farmers looking for new land to farm after losing their holdings at home during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). At first these men Toombs came mainly from Georgia but later some brought families along with them when they sold their properties back to the Mexican government following their victory over American forces at Yuma Pass*. This new territory included much that is still familiar today: rolling hills dotted with vineyards; rivers running through fertile valleys; millions of trees scattered across rolling country; bustling cities like Yorkville dotting grids of wide streets filled with marketplaces selling everything from eggs to fur coats; vast open spaces where you could find buffalo grazing orchards or deer hunting ranges….But there were also some surprises waiting for those who explored this new land: As one flows down Memory Valley’s gentle slope one comes upon vast copper mines workings dating back more than two centuries* (*See footnote below). Sayer did manage howeverto build his own sawmill which continued operations until 1865.*(Saying goodbye forever to Ayrton Sayer's mill might well be considered Times Square's earliest commercial development.) The area was part of Alta California under Mexican rule before it was ceded to the United States in 1848. The population of Ontario grew rapidly during the Gold Rush and, as a result, much development took place outside of the original town boundaries. In 1855, Ontario became an incorporated town when it absorbed the adjacent towns of Fremont and Stockton. In 1868, Ontario annexed the nearby town of Redding and in 1898, the city of Sacramento annexes it.
