Homo erectus lived here for some time before becoming extinct around 12,500 years ago. over time different groups of humans moved into this area including the Hahamatis tribe which inhabited present day Yosemite National Park; Maya Indians who lived near Mission Bay on San Francisco Bay; Pomo Indians who dwelt along Lake Superior; Ohlone people who lived near Sutter’s Fort on the San Joaquin River; Chumash people who occupied parts of central California (including Los Angeles); Costanoans who lived along lower Sacramento River; Mono Indians who inhabited Mono County east of Yosemite National Park; Shoshone people who resided near Winnemucca Mountain between Nevada and Oregon Territories during mid-19th century American expansion into these regions; Salishan People living on eastern slope of Mt Rainier National Park until they were displaced by Umpqua Confederates in 1865
