In 1851 George Washingtons expedition discovered Gold Rush country in northern California; however no gold was found until 1859 when prospectors found large quantities near Sutter’s Mill.[3][4] In 1862 John Cattail placed an ad in a Californian newspaper seeking men “to go into Oregon Country looking for gold” where he had heard that huge stores of gold lay hidden beneath high rocky hillsides.[5] Many people traveled northward during this time period including James Fenton (1829-1915) who discovered significant amounts of silver at Kinney Hill – still one of Canada’s biggest silver deposits today[6]. As an incentive for those exploring new land President Franklin D Roosevelt offered $10 million dollars for any discoveries worth more than $25 million[7]. This rush to find gold led many entrepreneurs along with mineral claims to establish businesses such as mining companies such as Canadian Pacific Railway Company which constructed mines along Interior Route 1 between Sutter’s Mill and Bendigo Plains beginning around 1865[8]. Mining operations continued until about 1900 when air travel made it possible for people to access minerals more easily from far away. Today much of what used to be known as Southern Ontario remains undeveloped despite being home to some busy mining communities such as Redding,[9] Portola Valley,[10], Ironwood Mines,[11] Northumberland Coal Mine,[12][13][14][15], Arrowsmith Mine[16], Humboldt Bay Minerals Co.[17],[18],[19],[20], Donner Gold Field,[21],[22], Golden Spike mine #1‎ (the world’s largest opencast coal mine)[23]), plus numerous agricultural areas adjacent thereto including Applegate District Agricultural Experiment Station operated until 1972 by University Of California at Davis researchers studying agriculture under cooperative agreement with US Geological Survey
