In the early 1800s, a group of men working in the goldfields of California decided to take up arms against Native Americans. They called themselves the "Bear Flaggers." The term may have come from a man named Benjamin Bear who was killed by Indians while protecting miners in 1851. With firearms at their disposal, these men became known as "The Gun-Loving Boys" and they terrorized Indian communities for years. In 1858, members of the Bear Flaggers stumbled upon and raided an ammunition depot in Ontario, California. The raid resulted in the deaths of several people and Waco's (a local Native American tribe)claim that this was one of the most brutal attacks on their community ever. This event is still considered a tragedy by many Californians today. Many residents of Ontario were inspired to become involved in gun ownership after learning about this incident. In 1868, John Brownell founded what is now Calguns Foundation to help promote firearm safety and education among individuals in Northern California. Today, Calguns Foundation remains one of Canada's leading firearms organizations with over 1 million members nationwide.
