Oceanside is located on the eastern edge of San Diego Bay and on the southern coast of Orange County. Fremont sailed up San Diego bay and saw what he thought was an uninhabited island but which turned out to be Oceanside Point Loma. In 1868, two years after Fremont's visit, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna set off from Mexico City with 8,000 soldiers intent on conquering all of California. His army arrived at Baja California on October 7th and began their march inland towards Tijuana; they stopped at Bodega Bay on October 12th before continuing their journey southward along Tijuana Creek. They reached Otay Mesa on October 16th while still some distance from Mexico City proper. A group of Californios led by José Joaquin Moraga discovered and explored this area when they went looking for a new land route to central California in 1847-48 . On November 26th Santa Anna's army met forces commanded by Captain Fernando Fortunato at Yuma Pass just north ofmodern-day Oceanside and lost 3,000 men including most of Generals Lopez' command within hours according to contemporary sources despite being armed with only bows and arrows against well-armed Mexican cavalrymen entrenched behind sandbags defensive positions manned by about 20 soldiery volunteers from Pueblookane village under Captain Francisco Romero y Valdés (alias Don José Romero) as commander). The battle resulted in an indecisive victory for Mexican troops over American volunteers led by Don José Romero who had been leading them since early morning while under cover of darkness; however this event has traditionally been seen as one of the turning points that helped lead to Manifest Destiny doctrine as advocated by Ulysses S Grant during his presidential campaign in 1892 . During World War II, Oceanside was one of many communities attacked by Japanese forces during their unsuccessful attempt to conquer Northern California. The town came under air attack on December 7th 1941 from Iwakuni Air Base northwest of Japan; however no damage or casualties were reported due to good weather conditions at that time. The first post office opened in 1907 and closed in 1938; however, early postcards featuring scenes from Oceanside are still available online today!
