Oceanside is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 46,362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of San Diego and is bordered to the east by Tijuana, Mexico; to the south by El Cajon Boulevard and Qualcomm Stadium; to the west by Interstate 5 and Rancho Peñasquitos Road. In 1821 John Wesley Powell arrived in search of buried American gold near Kettleman Reef when he though he could see active volcanoes twenty miles (32 km) off shoreline about halfway between Point Loma and Pismo Beach. After weeks of land exploration he found no relief from Mount Shasta or any other significant summits until he reached an unnamed peak two miles (3 km) northeast of where today’s Oceanside sits upon its current site in 1865 as part of his first exploration journey across Northern California coastal ranges for prospecting for new gold fields beyond our then known limits inland into what are now Yucca Valley and Imperial Valley but were then considered part of Alta California region due largely to Mexican control over this area during those days before America gained independence from Spain Larimer Squire map dated 1847 shows small town named Ocean View near present day intersection I-5 & Agua Dulce River The town was abandoned & later reoccupied by Indians who built some huts nearby In 1861 USGS catalogue recognized village name as Ocean View because tide gauge reading there showed high Tide on April 17th 1861 At that time it was within City Limits

The name of the town may be derived from "oches" which are rocks or boulders found along coastal areas of southern California. In 1866, Captain John Sutter discovered gold in what is now Inyokern Valley while exploring for a route to Sacramento through what is now Yucca Valley. Sutter named his discovery "Yuba City" after his friend and fellow explorer Joseph Yerba Buena (1768-1834). Yuba City was located about three miles east of present-day Oceanside proper. In 1881, entrepreneur Wenceslas Hollingsworth built Hollingsworth's Dry Goods Store in what is now downtown Oceanside. Hollingsworth became one of the largest men in local history by starting and running several small businesses during his lifetime including a grocery store, dry goods store, bakery, laundry business and two newspapers that he published himself - The Evening Tribune and The Weekly Herald - both founded in 1881 until 1893 when they merged into one newspaper called The Press Enterprise News Company Ltd.. After leaving office as mayor of San Diego in 1912 due to term limits set by then- Mayor Manuel Cámpora y Quiñones Jr., Hollingsworth moved back into town where he died at age 90 years old on October 1st 1915 at his home on First Street near Naval Air Station El Toro before moving onto an afterlife filled with travelogue writing activities until his death at age 97 years old on December 6th 1951 at Staitman Place adjacent to Veterans Memorial Park.). The town's fortunes changed with World War II when over 100 local servicemen served in various theaters around the world including campaigns like Pacific Theater Bomber Command (45 operations), European Theater Bomber Command (4 operations), North African Campaign (1 operation) air raids against German targets within Southern Italy that devastated cities such as Rome (Operation Catapult) as part of Operation Husky which began September 10th 1943; Okinawa Campaign 1945; atomic bombing missions over Hiroshima/ Nagasaki; Korean War; Vietnam War era support services aspects such as National Guard duty during 1970s open season hurricane relief efforts associated with Camp Pendleton’s reopening following almost 30 years closed since its closure aftermath Hurricane Katrina); numerous expansions such as a new police department building completed in 1984 followed by another hospital facility completed in 1990 which was recognized by Golden Globe Awards for Best Hospitality Facility – Ocean Beach Resort & Casino unveiled victory parade day prior Harbor Freight Showcase bringing thousands people down here daily promoting maritime industry throughout community Today there are many restaurants doing well thanks to millennials coming out late night looking for some good food without all those tourist traps
