They named this island "Lobos" after Saint Lazarus, who had been martyred in 69 AD. In 1847, José María Buenaventura used Lobo Island as his flagship during his expedition to explore Baja California Mexico In 1893,the US Navy acquired land from Santiago Mejia near present-day Torrance for $2 per acre (0·24 ha). The navy built a small harbor onsite and began using it as an anchorage for naval vessels visiting San Diego Bay On November 8th 1898 USS Constitution anchored offshore when another vessel - CSS Alabama - collided with her port side just south of shore leaving a long hole in her hull which required weeks of repair before she could be seaworthy again On May 6th 1912 the SS Californian sunk off shore near Point Lobos after hitting rocks while en route from Hawaii to Los Angeles Bay USS Olympia was lost here on October 25th 1942 when her starboard engine died while sailing into full steamahead across Puget Sound towards Seattle
