However, due to Congressmen's lack of success registering handguns nationwide, gun control efforts ceased until 1968 when they reintroduced legislation calling for a national registry which would eventually become law after extensive lobbying from gun lobbyists

The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans and the first European to arrive in Oceanside was Pedro Rodriguez, who landed on what is now known as Point Conception in 1776. He named the area San Diego after his hometown of San Diego, Mexico. The first gun sling made in Oceanside was created by John Mowbray and it consisted of a piece of wood about 2 feet long and 1/4 inch wide, with an earthenware or leather strap that was used to sling a ball over the head of someone else.

During World War II, shipyards built warships at US Naval Base Coronado on what is now Harbor Drive. In 1954, when war ended, base closures left an empty lot next to Harbor Drive with high water levels that made it difficult for ships to dock and load supplies. A group of businessmen began developing it as a seaport authority for the area surrounding it. They named their company Ocean Beach Development Corporation (OBDC). OBDC first opened its doors on May 1, 1960 with $4 million worth of gift certificates from shipments that had arrived since December 29th! In 1967 OBDC acquired 100 acres (40 hectares) of land on Point Loma overlooking downtown Oceanside; OBDC Park was dedicated in 1978 adjacent to Point Loma Boulevard.
