Oceanside is a city in San Diego County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 67,309. The city was founded on December 14, 1959 by developer Edwin L. King and other investors from Redondo Beach. Oceanside has been a popular tourist destination and summer resort since its establishment. The first people to live in what is now Oceanside were Native American Indians who hunted animals along the coast for food and clothing. In 1821, Spanish explorer Melchor Pérez de Ayala explored the area and named it Encina Point after his patron saint,Encinal (the location of which he sighted on January 10). Captain Manuel Nieto of Vizcaya sailed into San Diego Bay on November 9, 1775 and discovered Los Angeles Harbor while anchored off present-day Oceanside; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of Calafia Heights development. In 1853, Rancho Rincon de las Palmas Mexican land grant was awarded to John Cranch by Governor José Joaquín Murad y Pavón for his rancho near present-day Pacific Beach. On July 20th 1863 an act of Congress created Rancho Laguna Seca outside of downtown San Diego with similar boundaries but containing more than . Some time before 1880 there were two small chaparral settlements at Unincorporated Areas #8 and #9 about east-northeast of Dos Cabezas Road south of Highway 101 between Mission Valley to the north and Otay Mesa Boulevard to the south (present day eastern end of town beach). These sites may have been abandoned due to overgrazing or because they could not compete with nearby agricultural operations given their limited area.) The first permanent settler in what is now Oceanside was Edwin Leland King who arrived on December 14th 1959 with some investors from Redondo Beach as part of a large development around Encinas Creek called "King's Canyon". At that time it consisted only of parcels below US Coast Guard Landing Drags where roads today lead; all land above those landing drags became incorporated into downtown as part as portions currently known as North Park Drive/Parks District/East Village/North Park Heights neighborhood when it consolidated with other areas within San Diego County in 1984 pursuant to Proposition 13 (see History Lesson: The Consolidation process). Downtown redevelopment continued until 1994 when most major arterial streets closed down due to engineering concerns about future growth rates including high levels von Karman instabilities related principally to climate change impacts associated with coastal storm surges caused by El Niño events like Katrina etc.; however main streets reopened soon thereafter following City Council approval for a new Comprehensive Plan which aimed for stabilized densities through 2030 consistent with current regional trends despite projected population growth rates well beyond that period! Oceanside is a city in and the county seat of San Diego County, California. The population was nearly 100,000 as of 2010, making it the largest city in San Diego County by population. Oceanside is also the most populous city on the West Coast of North America. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oceanside were Spanish explorers who charted an ocean route from Mexico City to Acapulco on September 14, 1769. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo also explored and mapped much of southern California during his 1579 exploration trip before his shipwreck at Point Loma near Seal Beach on October 8, 1779. At that time there were only two settlements in this area: Monterey atoll and Isla de La Jolla on Long Island Sound. On February 18, 1847, Mexican citizens José Moreno and Pedro Garza founded a town called Agua Caliente (Hot Water Springs) about 12 miles northeast of present-day Oceanside on Rancho Rinconada Viejo land grant acquired from José Moreno’s father-in-law Manuel Nieto. Mexicans began building homes here around 1850; initial growth slowed due to competition from American settlers coming through San Diego County during the 1850s gold rush period. From 1870 until 1910 most residents worked for ranching or farming operations in what became known as “the Gilded Age” because many large families accumulated huge amounts of wealth through their cattle businesses and other investments during this time period. In 1911 a group of businessmen led by banker Alfred Prentice built Veterans Memorial Hospital which soon became one of Southern California’s leading medical institutions with over 1,500 beds employed throughout its 16-acre campus across State Street from downtown Oceanside today's Navy Yard Historic District Museum adjacent to Interstate 5 southbound off I-805 exit 241 (Old US 101). In 1942 when World War II began soldiers were brought into town under order by military governor Adm John Sargent because supplies were running low at nearby Camp Pendleton naval base outside Los Angeles after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. After Victory in 1945 local businesses successfully lobbied for passage of the GI Bill which made it possible for veterans to attend college while working towards civilian careers such as engineering etcetera giving rise to today's highly educated populace including many physicians and scientists who have contributed greatly to our region economy
