Portions of today's downtown were developed along what would become Alma Street during this time period; much of today's Navy Yard can be found south of Girard Avenue between First and Second Streets (now bounded by North Fifth Avenue and North Sixth Avenue). On July 29, 1896, with the admission of California into the United States as a state, Oceanside became one of its first cities. The following year saw another donation land grant from Mission Santa Ana de la Costa - this one naming Point Loma Park after former Mexican president Vicente Guerrero – which would eventually encompass most of what exists today near Girard Avenue between First and Second Streets (now bounded by North Fifth Avenue and North Sixth avenue). During World War II various naval shipbuilding yards were situated here including Naval Shipyard No.(N) 5 on Harbor Boulevard just east offshore from current day Girard Ave., making it home to USS "San Diego" (BB-39), USS "Pensacola" (AGS 10), USS "Providence" (AKA SS 222), USS "Wasp" (SS 214) among others In 1966 when Interstate 15 was completed linking San Diego with Los Angeles County it included parts of north County including Oceanside proper plus inland neighborhoods like Fallbrook and Carlsbad++ . After years leading up to that event local activists lobbied for I-15 to continue going through downtown insteadExit 3 which would have created more commute traffic for locals businesses that might have seen their hours shortened if Exit 1 had been open

As a result of this naval activity, many businesses grew up around Navy base land such as marine plastics manufacturer Grumman Defense Industries Inc., munitions maker Midshipmen Paper Products Division Inc., engineering services company Weyerhaeuser Chemical Company, dry dock contractor American Boatbuilding Corporation, steel producer Alcoa Aluminum Industries Inc., shipbuilding conglomerate Bethlehem Steel Corp., rubber products manufacturer Kaiser Wilhelm Fritsch AG and boatbuilder John Day Boatbuilders Ltd.. Today's economy is based largely on tourism with some manufacturing operations taking place such as petrochemical firm Petrobras International SA’s US$5 billion project to build an oil refinery at PCHXeport Orange County adjacent to Oceanside Airport - one of Southern California’s largest media markets - along with Boeing’s new $2 billion plant at Imperial Beach adjacent to North Coast Plaza mall developments just down the street from where Mission Valley Regional Park borders Interstate 5.

The first Europeans to visit Oceanside were the Spanish in 1769. The first Englishman to set foot on what is now Oceanside was Capt. John Davenport in 1821. In 1846, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Simeon to James Irvine and his brother, George Irvine. TheIrvine brothers began developing the land into a small town by 1850.
