Oceanside is first known to have been inhabited by Ohlone people in the 6th century AD. The area now called Oceanside was settled by European Californians in 1835 and became part of the Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant given to José Garza Filisola and Vicente Hidalgo on January 15, 1836. On May 10, 1851 Judge Augustus Ewing granted title to a town lot in what is now downtown Oceanside. This patent covers an area that today includes most of downtown and much of Canoga Park outside of it In 1870 Tomás Romero built the first post office in what is now Downtown Oceanside. In 1886 Manuel Garrido opened the first mercantile store east of Los Angeles on State Street. In 1907 Captain John Jellico donated land for a military airfield near present-day Naval Air Station Miramar which became Coast Guard Air Station Miramar (CGASM). Over time masterminded by Commodore James "Jimmy" Baldwin USN (1892-1977) CGASM grew rapidly with such installations as Patrol Boat No 2 (1924), Helicopter Squadron One (1941), Weapons School (1945), Aircraft Maintenance Battalion (1949), helicopter detachment No 3 (1963) and many other important functions over which our current visitors enjoy today including rescue operations during Hurricane Katrina on August 29th 2005 Today's skyline can be seen from miles around while historical sites like USS Constitution Museum & Tower or Historic Adobe Walls provide beautiful glimpses into one of America's oldest cities – founded more than 500 years ago!
