Oakley is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. Oakley is located just east of Fresno and north-west of Madera. The population was 1,498 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Oakley was James Irvine in 1853. His wife, Catherine Irvine, named their daughter Oakley after an oak tree that grew near their home on their property. In 1856, John Copley and his brother-in-law William Hutton bought land from James Irvine for $4 per acre. They started farming crops and built a cabin around 1860. It burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt by Copley's son Charles Ewart Copley and his wife Sarah Atherton Caldwell (1847-1924). They named it "Cable Hill". In 1868, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in nearby Stockton. This led to large flows of people into the Central Valley and prompted new settlers to come to Oakley including Tom Doherty (1820-1900) who established a cattle ranch there called Rancho San Antonio de Atascosa o la Isla Blanca which included parts of what is now Fresno County and Kern County today; David Price (died 1903); Augustus Thornton (1825-1902), who founded Thornton School; John Pemberton (1837-1920) who settled near Kings Canyon National Park; Wm Fenton Carruth(1838-1912), one of the founders of Sacramento County; Wm Fenton Carruth & Co.(came about 1870), pioneer farmers who arrived from Northern California with horses and carts to settle half a mile south of present day Needles on the banks of Coyote Creek; Peter Kreye(born c 1830), postmaster general for Kern County from 1875 until he resigned due to ill health in 1895; Jno Noyes(born c 1840), rancher, prospector and business man whose family ranch extended from present day Needle south along Coyote Creek past Needle Lake all the way upriver to Bakersfield where they built a sawmill; Andrew Dickenson(baptized Dec 6th 1850 – died Apr 9th 1916); George Stephenson & Sons lumber merchants known as The Fathers because they operated six storesone each in Stockton Modesto Cityand Sacramento before moving northward into Kern County during prohibition period One result early on was increased use by local landowners for forced labor - such as building roads or constructing dams - leading to tension with some locals over working conditions outside the town limits
