Pyrrhus wanted revenge on Rome for defeating him at Zama several years earlier; he invaded Italy just before suprising Rome in 343 BC. Pyrrhus was successful in taking Rome but lost many soldiers along the way including Pyrrhus himself who died in battle. This display of bravery by Pyrrhus inspired other states across Europe to also develop their own forms of self-defense weaponry (e.g., Gladius sword). Rome did manage to maintain its hold on power for centuries through its military might but after 476 AD when Western Goths sacked Constantinople – the largest city in Christendom – all hope seemed lost for medieval Christians during what would be known as The Great Crisis period (476–98 AD). The townsite lies just east of Interstate 5 on what has been called "the most scenic route in America" Route 66, which runs along its eastern edge from Lompoc to Tulare County. The first inhabitants were Native Americans who lived there for centuries before white traders arrived in the early 1800s looking for fur trade goods. A post office was established at Oakley in 1887, but no mail ever reached the town because distance and terrain made traveling to it difficult. One account writes: In 1892 two brothers named George and Anna obtained a grant from the Rancho San Miguel de Allende administrators for 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of present-day Oakley on an elevation of . They laid out a town site including one street each side with lots measuring 50 × 50 feet (15 m × 15 m). Streets were named after statesmen or natural resources like oak trees or rivers: Nye Street after Senator Hiram Nye; San Bernardino Boulevard after Sutter Baron Richard Bear Canyon Road; Los Angeles Boulevard after King George III of Great Britain; etc., until eventually all but one street disappeared under development—Nyestick Drive became Main Street and Riverside Drive became Riverside Boulevard today." According to historian Noel Kingsbury, "the growth [of Oakleys] can be traced back largely to two factors: first, agricultural production brought people into proximity with each other; second, transportation facilities opened up as railroads came through the area." By 1907 there were more than 100 residents living in what would become downtown including a grocery store, bank branch, hotel/motel/grill restaurant and Masonic Lodge Hall where dances were held every Friday night during summertime celebration called "Fiesta del Oro" that raised money for local charities like Stonington Park School District No. 2 which provided education for children below poverty line during that time period "(sic)." That year also saw construction begin on what would become known as North Main Street which ran parallel to South Main Street bisecting what later became Downtown Avenue between main streets North & South Main Streets while also providing access through West Side Alley off Elmwood Avenue north of I-5." With advances in automobiles such as Model Ts and Ford Fords being imported into California during this time periodOakleys seen rapid growth starting around 1910 when they had only 7 residents living in their downtown core while they boasted 10 businesses operating either directly or indirectly within their limits plus 4 schools which included 3 Primary Schools open day & night since 1888 while also having an insane asylum open 24 hrs per day." However by 1920 when their population hit 21 residents only 4 businesses remain within their boundaries + 2 schools closed down making them barely maintain any level of operations let alone keep pace with recent arrivals like Alameda County who increased their population by over 150% throughout this same timeframe yet managed to build more than half a dozen large commercial districts+ 8 churches+10 school districts across Contra Costa county... So much for being #1!" By 1930 when their population hit 31 residents only 3 businesses remain within boundaries + 2 schools closed down making them barely maintain any level of operations let alone keep pace with recent arrivals like Orinda County who increased their population by over 150% throughout this same timeframe yet managed to build more than half adozen large commercial districts+ 12 churches+10 school districts across Contra Costa county... So much for being #1!" Accordingly according to Kingsbury "...[Oakleys] had finally reached its potential as an agricultural center due not onlyto its location but also because some enterprising individuals decided that business could best be conducted here rather than far away from populated areas." This led eventually to railroad tracks passing through town allowing farmers grains such as cottonseed oil and potatoes from Fresno Valley bound for Stockton or Sacramento instead driving hundreds if not thousands miles round trip carrying produce home expenses along with animals carcasses back East creating what we now know as truck farming becoming very common placeentechnically speaking during this time period".
