The first European to enter what is now Contra Costa County was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. Heading northeast along the coast of Northern California he noted an opening in the coast that led into a bay where he landed his ship, "San Salvador". Oakley post office was established on October 12, 1856, and named for General John Blythe Oakley who fought with General William Sutter during the Gold Rush era in northern California. A group of farmers who had gathered around Captain Samuel Folsom built a cabin near what is now downtown Oakland so they could trade goods with ships anchored offshore. In 1863 they formed the First National Bank which still stands today as one of Contra Costa County's largest institutionsA store opened in 1865 at Seventh and Mission Streets by Jno Eason (1814-1900), an early settler in Oakland who also founded Hayward and other nearby townships It wasn't until 1907 when new streets were laid out that most residents would come to call their town "Oakley." At that time it consisted only of scattered farmssteads surrounding a small creek running through it's center
