Oakley is located on the Kern River about 25 miles (40 km) east of Bakersfield and 50 miles (80 km) north of Fresno. The name "Oakley" comes from an early Spanish rancho named La Paloma de las Colinas, which extended from oak trees along both banks of the river to some 7 mi (11 km) downstream. In 1849, General Kearny discovered gold near present-day Oakley and ordered its occupants to clear away the obstructions so he could assay for treasure there. The town was platted in 1867 by James Hahn as part of what were then three separate counties – Kern, Butte, and Tulare – when they became one unit under Governor John Pahrump. Oakley's first post office opened on July 16, 1868; it closed on September 3, 1938 due to World War II regulations prohibiting mail service between cities with different rates of taxation). The community's first school was built in a log cabin on land donated by Mrs. Anna Hahn in 1872; it burned down in 1898 but was rebuilt using donations from local citizens and volunteers.
