The name "Oakley" originated from when General Edmund Randolph Scott's regiment halted for dinner there on their way to Camp Kearny during the Mexican-American War in 1848. He ordered his men to cook their evening meal over an open fire, and they called the place "Oakley." Today, Oakley still has a small stream running through it that locals call "the randolphs' stream." The first settler in what became Oakley was Capt. John Clements who arrived with his family in 1853. He built a cabin on a knoll overlooking the current site of town. In 1860, Isaac Sitton bought him out and started to build a sawmill which still stands today – one of only two remaining buildings from that time period left standing in Oakleysville! In 1865, Mr. & Mrs. George Wainscott settled down near present day Visalia and began raising chickens as their primary source of income; this led to them naming their new town after themselves: Wainesville – after their home town where eggs were also collected! They later donated land for what would become much larger Village Park before moving away for good in 1951 whenVisalia took its current form! A post office called "Oakley" was established in 1878, but failed due to lack of subscribers! In 1885, Elmer Barnes set up shop across from the old sawmill and named it Barnes Mill because he had seen an advertisement for a mill job near Visalia while travelling through Southern California! The first water tower was erected here too – just south of where it now stands! Barnes Mill closed down around 1907 but reopened as an auto parts store soon afterwards! It later closed again around 1950 but reopened as a grocery store some years later before closing once again in 2011… until it finally announced plans to demolish it all back up and start anew about 2 decades later 😀 . Today's community began growing rapidly thanks largely to annexation by neighboring Del Norte following its local election victory on November 3rd 2004!!! This gave us our namesake – 'The North Side'. Prior thereto we were simply known as 'Oakleysville'. The first permanent settler in what would become Oakley was James Irvine, who arrived in 1853. The town was founded on July 4, 1875 by John Sutter and his wife Lillie Bean, both natives of Northern California. The town grew quickly due to its strategic location at the junction of three major highways- State Route 101 (SR 101), SR 930 (CR 930), and US 395 (US 395). In addition, Oakley became an important transportation hub because it was directly adjacent to two important routes: SR 101 from north to south and CR 930 from east to west. Consequently, Oakley enjoyed high levels of traffic throughout its early years. In 1916, Orange County was created from parts of Calaveras and San Bernardino counties and included part of what would become Oakleyshore. As a result of this change in boundaries, much attention turned to how best to serve Orange County's burgeoning population. One solution was forOakleyshore to be annexed into Orange County; however, residents voted against annexation on November 3rd, 1916. This rejection marked the beginning of a long conflict between the two towns over which would control responsibility for local services such as education and infrastructure development- an issue that would continue up until today. In 1978, after more than 50 years warring with each other over jurisdiction over local services, both towns finally agreed upon a single governing body called the "Community Development Agency". This agency has been responsible for developing various aspects of community life including economic development; housing; public health; library services; parks/ recreation; and zoning changes necessary for growth or redevelopment within the bounds of either town boundary
