Oakley is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 13,961 at the 2010 census. The Oakleys are a prominent family of American pioneers who settled in Kern County and founded the town of Oakley in 1875. The first settlers were John Alder and his wife Catharine Alder, who arrived with their two children on horseback from Oregon on July 4, 1875. They named their new community "Oakley" after the oak tree that they saw near their home on theranch called "Baumgartner". Alder's brother-in-law George Beechum also came to Oakley early in 1876 and began farming land around what is now downtown. By 1880, there were 10 families living in Oakley. In 1886, Wm. Hite developed land east of downtown for oil production and renamed it Rangeview Oil Field after his friend Colonel James Groomer Harriman (1821–1900) of the Harriman Ranch. In 1898, Jens Jensen purchased some of Groomer Harriman's property west of downtown for $8 per acre (the price had been lowered by $2 per acre because no mineral rights could be acquired). He began developing this land into an agricultural center known as Agricultural Park during which time he built several thousand homes and employed many workers including his son Willard Jensen (1911–2006), one of America's leading architects and planners during the postwar period; he designed such famous buildings as City Hall in San Francisco and Regency Tower in Los Angeles. Jensen died suddenly while operating a combine on his property on May 1, 1928, leaving behind three sons: Willard II (1928–2009), Kenneth (born 1934), and Arne Olsen Jensen (born 1939). One daughter: Karen Jensen Rohde (born 1945). Their father had originally named them Kenneth & Karen but changed it to Arne Olsen when he became aware that people might confusion him with Edward Albers Jensen Sr., another son from earlier marriage to Kathrine Christensen Larsen ('Karen' born 1932). In 1905, the City Council decided that it would be better for the town if it became an incorporated city so that it could have its own police department and fire department. In1959, when Redding-Salinas metropolitan area was created,OakLEY became one of its 12 cities within its boundaries-making it one of Northern California's most populous towns outside of San Francisco or Sacramento!
