Oakley is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,611 at the 2010 census. Oakley is named for General John Fetterman, who fought in the Mexican–American War and then won fame as an American general during the Civil War. The first known settlers in what is now Oakley were French Canadians who came overland from the Quebec province in 1827. The town of Oakley was founded on July 8, 1828 by citizens of San Bernardino County and Orange County combined. During World War II, many people from Oakley served in the U.S. military or civilian employment including Air Force pilot Floyd Kapp and his wife Lillian; Navy submariners Ted Brewer and John Pyle; Army Sergeant First Class Jack Weiler; Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Tom Beaudoin; and Park ranger Dave Sheehan among others. On October 5th, 1910 a gun case company store was opened by Wm Hickey at 4010 N SR 6 (now part of I-5) in present day downtown Oakley with $2 per week rent for a small space on Main Street which he leased from Domingo Gomez Sr., proprietor of the nearby Gomez Drug Store #4105 since that time it has been operated as part of G&M Sporting Goods located across SR 6 off Highway 118 even though it still uses “Hickey’s” name today
